UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
