The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
