Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
