Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
